President’s Note – 5/11/20

We continue with week 4 of our Harriers “Covid” runs tonight! I hope everyone is enjoying getting around running the different courses and getting to know the run leader. A reminder that we ask everyone to be 10 minutes early to the runs, and contact the run leader if you’re going to be late or not run.

Fingers crossed it won’t be too long until we can get back to a more “normal” Harriers Thursday and we can all catch up, rather than just our groups of 10. I won’t harp on with any filler nonsense this week – The information you all want is about the Marathon 2020!

As revealed last week, the Mara 2020 will be on Sunday November 29 for Members Only!

Current financial members have been sent entry details via the email address listed with their membership details. If you have not received your email please check your membership status or contact Bryan Cake on 0408 201 200.

The email will have a link to click, and entry is very easy. I suggest you enter early as we do have entry limits due to current Covid restrictions. I also ask that you do not share this link with anyone who is not a current member of the club. Yes it is exclusive and we have to make it that way this year for obvious reasons. Membership has its benefits!

Thanks to Cakey for organising the entry along with Rob Preston from Thought Sports who will be timing the event for us. Thanks to Edi for plotting out the courses for the Marathon, Half and 10k, for liaising with the Winery and putting together the permitting required to run the event.

Everyone will need to pre-enter. The cost for all events will be $35. We’ll be running all events from the Traralgon Winery. There are still a few things to finalise, but all runs will be on the Rail Trail.

The 10k and ½ Mara will be an out and back loop, with the Full Marathon being 2 loops. In this way, we contain the runs, it’s easier to manage as far as Covid regulations and volunteers are concerned, and we eliminate traffic management costs. The Traralgon Winery will be an excellent and unique venue for this year’s “unprecedented” version of the Marathon, and as they’re allowed to have 50 outside and 30 inside (as of writing), we’ll be able to have some small celebrations within the current regulations.

We already have entries across all events and the email only went out last night, so make sure you get in early to avoid missing out, and help us with organisation and planning. If you can’t run any of the events due to injury but would like to help out on the day, please let me know.

The main idea is for us to run a Marathon and Running Festival event in some form, to maintain our continuous run of 53 years, and for it to be a celebration for members, something to look forward to after such a long break from club activities. Hopefully it marks the easing of restrictions and is a positive event for all Harriers, moving us forward to “Covid normal” (whatever that may look like)!

Obviously, this year has been difficult in many ways for most people, and as a club we’ve been severely affected, as has everyone in the community. But through adversity great things may rise, and I commend all members for their resilience, positivity and enthusiasm to support the club during such “unprecedented” times! Looking forward to seeing you all and marking our historic event!
