TRARALGON HARRIERS’ RACE REPORT 3/11/2016
NNM – NEWBOROUGH – BOTANIC GARDENS 5KM HANDICAP.
The venue for last Thursday’s Traralgon Harriers’ weekly handicap event was the leafy southern side of Newborough, not far from the railway line. The new 5km route included a single lap of flattish to undulating terrain and a section of local rail trail.
In the aftermath of some recent major running events, including the Melbourne Marathon and the Bright 4-Peaks Alpine Climbs, numbers were down on Thursday but enthusiasm and competitive spirit were still evident amongst the 31 runners and walkers who joined in.
First, second and third in the handicap component were Liz Kenney, 23:28, Alison Whiter, 29:10 and Tim Buckley, 26:22.
Liz Kenney, seemingly little affected by her Melbourne Marathon effort just three weeks ago, has now won the handicap twice in her two Thursday races since.
Alison Whiter has finally returned to the Thursday event, apparently in good form, after a long parenting absence; whilst Tim Buckley continued to maintain his first- three finishing position in the handicap of the previous two events.
Fastest overall of the evening were: Glenn Graham, 20:18; Des Paynter (pushing his son Dylan), 21:40; Kayla Gallert, 22:21; Georgia Pearson, 22:25; Warren Shields, 23:09 and Karen Graham, 23:23.
This Thursday’s (10/11/2016) run is the Tour De West 6km handicap, as well as an intermediate race of 3km and a junior event of 1.5km. Meeting point is the Harrier’s clubrooms at the corner of Douglas Parade and Grubb Avenue, Traralgon. Starting time is 6pm but please arrive early to register and warm up for the event. Newcomers are invited to join in, whether they are dabblers in running/walking or have a more competitive motivation.
