Ian was a talented athlete in a number of sports and represented Australia in skiing and running, besides playing Australian Rules for Norwood in the South Australia Football League.
Results of Australian Marathon championship held at Hobart in 1968 are as follows – 1st Derek Clayton 2-14-47, 2nd John Farrington 2-16-41, and 3rd Ian Wheeler in 2-20-33. Ian has won the 1969 Traralgon Marathon in 2-27-44.
He represented Australia in Canada during the late 1960s. He won several shorter Victorian Marathon Club events during the late 1960s.
