In 1993, being, an Australian national living and training in Edmonton, Alberta, John ran against an elite field winning and establishing a new indoor master’s record for the mile at Barton Hall with a time of 4:17:84 (it still stands as a meet record).  The next month, Bermingham ran the masters mile at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden and finished second to Ireland’s world record holder Eamonn Coghlan in 4:10.  (Coghlan won the event in 4:05.).  Coghlan ran the first sub-four minute masters mile at Boston (3:58.15) later that spring.  John qualified for Moscow Olympic team but got sick and missed trials.  At 59 he ran 4min59sec for a mile.

Note: John Bermingham’s 1975 10 km Road Race Time of 23 min. 23 sec. is faster than the current 10 km World Record.

It took some time to explain to officials that the course was short.  The VAAA official for the turnaround point insisted it was where he directed and not further along the road as the runners tried to tell him.
